Pre-Conference Tour, Wednesday, June 21, 2023: National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and American Sign Museum

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is located on the north bank of the Ohio River. This museum celebrated Freedom’s heroes from the era of the underground railroad along with all efforts to abolish human enslavement and securing freedom for all people. This architectural masterpiece holds the only known surviving rural jail transported from its original Kentucky location.

The American Sign Museum is dedicated to the art and history of commercial signs and sign making. The American Sign Museum is proud to be the largest public museum dedicated to signs in the United States! Covering more than 100 years of American sign history in 20,000 square feet of indoor space, the museum is a walk through the ages of technology and design.

The storefront-laden Signs on Main Street display recreates a typical "Main Street USA", with shop windows full of sign-related objects, curiosities, and samples.

Learn more while taking the audio tour on your phone. Explaining the larger topics, as well as surprising stories about the signs themselves, paints a clearer picture of the collection and is highly recommended. Don't forget to check out Neonworks of Cincinnati, the full-time neon workshop located inside of the museum! You can see tube-benders working their craft making signs for sign companies today.

The tour includes lunch in a private dining room at Moerlein House Cincinnati. This local microbrewery produces a full line of local beers and it a celebration of Cincinnati 19th century beer gardens.

Post-Conference Tour, Sunday, June 25, 2023:  Cincinnati President’s tour

Your tour of Cincinnati will pass the heart of the city at Fountain Square where throngs of people gather for brown bag lunches, concerts, sports and political rallies including a speech by President Bush.  You will pass the Contemporary Arts Center, Procter and Gamble’s International Headquarters and the Taft Museum, where Wm. Howard Taft made his acceptance speech from the front steps. Through beautiful Lytle Park, you will see a rare statue of a beardless Abraham Lincoln.  Through Garfield park and the statue of James Garfield.  Fun fact, President George W. Bush threw the first ever ceremonial pitch at Great American Ball Park Stadium.  We will also pass Garfield Park and a statue of President James Garfield.

We will stop for a tour of the William Howard Taft home. High atop one of Cincinnati's most prominent hilltops stands the two-story Greek Revival house where William Howard Taft was born and grew up. Hard work, a good education, and an interest in civic duty are attributes that made the Taft family outstanding leaders over the years. The environment that shaped Taft's character and philosophy is highlighted during a visit to the site.  This tour will give you a chance to see many items actually used by President Taft who is the only person to serve as the President of the United States and later as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

We will also stop at the Taft Museum.  Indulge in an enchanting tour of two of Cincinnati’s most lavish estates.  The Charles P. Taft home, now the Taft Museum, is one of the finest models of Federal architecture in the country.  The owners, Anna and Charles Taft (half-brother to William Howard Taft) appreciated the value of their residence as a historic and architectural landmark and chose to present their home and art collection to the citizens of Cincinnati. The museum houses Duncanson landscape murals painted on the foyer walls, portraits by British artists of the eighteenth century, period furniture and mantels, ceiling decorations of acanthus leaves and eagles, and decorative arts of jewelry, rock-crystal carvings, rare watches, and Chinese porcelains. The Taft’s formal garden is based on French models and its classical lines and well-trimmed shrubs complement the house’s rear façade.
